HEAD LICE PROTOCOL
The School Nurse will:
- Inform parents of students in the classroom of a positive case of lice, when there are two or more cases within the same classroom.
- Inspect the heads of students in the classroom that has two or more identified cases of lice.
- Notify the parent once a student has been identified as having an active infestation of head lice.
- Give parents information regarding standard treatment and follow up procedures. Encourage parent to contact their physician for further questions or information. The student will be sent home for treatment along with instructions on how to treat the home environment.
- Identify siblings and check for head lice.
- School official will notify any after school programs a student, who is positive for head lice, may be attending.
- Meet with student and parent upon return to school for a re-inspection. A receipt will be provided showing the product that was used for treatment. If it is determined that the student still has an active infestation, the school nurse will dismiss the student home for further comb out. A receipt will be required after the 7-10 day retreatment according to the product used. An appointment for a recheck by the school nurse will be needed before going to class.
- Instruct teacher to inform students to bring in plastic bags for their coats and backpacks when there are two or more students in a classroom with lice, or if re-infestation has occurred.
- Make maintenance department aware of any classrooms that may require carpet cleaning. Daily vacuuming is recommended.
- Provide privacy and confidentiality when dealing with head lice issues.
- Instruct families who require repeated treatment to consult a physician.
