I have been teaching first grade at ICS for 23 years and I am still loving it! My own two children attended school here, at ICS and are both doing well. I have lived in Monroe Township for over 35 years. I have taught in the New York City Public Schools for ten years before coming to ICS. I graduated from Queens College of the City University of  New York and have my BA and Master’s degree in Education. I love teaching!

    This Month at a Glance

JanuaryR:

 A Happy and Healthy New Year to All!!

Religion: We will  begin learning about the Liturgical Year, the Our Father, and stories about Jesus. We pray for special intentions before every religion class, so if you have anyone or anything you want us to pray for just let us know.

Language Arts: We will continue working on writing in a complete sentence, mechanics, identifying and writing different kinds of sentences. We will identify nouns and verbs and will learn about rules for forming plural nouns, possessive nouns and tenses. We are and will continue writing stories using the skills we have learned in grammar and reading.

In reading we have begun Book 3 and will continue with blends. We will be learning about rules for forming long vowel sounds and all about contractions. We will also continue with inflectional endings-s and -ed at the end of verbs. We will be writing about comparing and contrasting different things.

Math: We have completed all kinds of graphs and doing probability. Next we will be continuing with addition strategies such as counting on, using the number line and doubles plus one. We will learn how to apply some of these to subtraction as well.

Social Studies: We will continue with reading a map and learning the names and location of the continents. We are presently reading about famous historical people and will be making a video of our presentations.

We are especially looking forward to being with each other and to learning lots of new and fun things. We read the book, The Kissing Hand and loved its message along with the puppet we made of Chester, who is the main character.

We are learning how to get into the routine of things in first grade.

Here is a little look at some of the things we will be learning.

Reading: Short Vowels: a, i; Digraph: ck; Parts of a book, inflectional ending-s, using the illustrations, making inferences, and of course, comprehension.

Grammar: How to write a sentence, rules for use of capital letters, punctuation marks; Story writing

Math: Patterns, patterns in numbers, comparing numbers, concept of addition

Science: How we get the seasons

Social Studies: Rules

 

REMINDERS TO PARENTS

Please continue to help your child study from the reading word list I sent home.

Please teach your child how to tie his/her shoe. I will be checking their shoe-tying progress after Christmas.
