WHAT’S HAPPENING NOW IN K-8 ART? Following is a summary of projects on which the students are currently working. A sampling of K - 8 projects will be on display for Catholic Schools Week, January 2- February 3. This “mini-exhibit” is a “PREVIEW OF COMING ATTRACTIONS” for the May art show (date coming soon). All projects are related to this year’s theme (see explanation of theme and objectives below):

Each year the art program focuses on a different theme, around which lessons are planned. This year’s theme, Tribute to the Moving Image, is inspired by: · The world of film with its rich history, genres, and performers... · Traditional fine artists who emphasize the principle of movement in their work…...and · Varied visual artists who have ties to the film and entertainment industry

GRADING Students are evaluated in the following categories: Design, Technique, Class Work, Homework, Quizzes

Students will work on two and three dimensional art projects informed by this theme while continuing to develop their understanding of the basic elements and principles of art (color, line, shape, form, pattern, balance, movement, etc.). A discipline-based, integrated approach is used to teach art production skills, art history, aesthetics, and art criticism. At all levels students will participate in art criticism that encourages them to examine their own and fellow students’ work on both cognitive and affective levels. When possible, projects will connect to related studies in music, science, literature, and other disciplines. Some lessons may utilize technology for art creation, research, or other purposes. The art program will culminate in May with a school-wide K– 8 art exhibit. |
KINDERGARTEN The students have been working on a collage landscape inspired by a segment of Disney’s Fantasia that is set to the music of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker. They have learned about the parts of a landscape: horizon line, foreground, middle ground, and background. |
GRADE 1 To tie in with our theme, students will weave real (reel) film and paper. They have learned the weaving terms warp and weft. |
GRADE 2 Inspired by the 1942 musical, Yankee Doodle Dandy, the students are finishing a two-sided composite flag that combines images from the film with shapes cut from reproductions of antique American flags. This lesson also links to their social studies lessons on the flag, providing an opportunity for them to make connections between subject areas. |
GRADE 3 Students are drawing a variety of favorite animated characters from classic Christmas TV shows. They will then transform these characters into a Picasso-inspired Cubist composition. |
GRADE 4 The students are creating vintage-styled “Jumping Jack Toys” based on characters from Pixar’s Toy Story movie series. |
GRADE 5 A Night at the Oscars is a (computer) research and studio project that requires students to become familiar with classic film stars, the history of the Academy Awards, and the history of fashion design of the 20th century. Students will design an outfit for their chosen movie star to wear at the gala Oscar event. |
GRADE 6 Using a color-encoding system specially formulated to work with 3D glasses (similar to those used for 3D films), the students have created thumbnail color sketches inspired by the work of the artist Matisse. Their best thumbnail is being enlarged and duplicated to make a oil pastel version. |
GRADE 7 Step-by-step, the students are creating a miniature zoetrope, an early animation device that produces the illusion of motion from a rapid sequence of still pictures. They have been experimenting with simple animation themes and have integrated math (measuring) skills in the creation of their animated strips. |
GRADE 8 Students have been introduced to the Beatles’1968 animated musical fantasy Yellow Submarine. Adapting the colorful, psychedelic pop art style of the film, the students will recreate several CD designs based on songs from the movie. |
